The Best Ark Mods Reviewed

ark taming review

When running a server, one of the most frustrating questions is what are the best Ark mods to use on your new server.

With thousands of mods out there, we have tried our very best to narrow it down to just the best ark mods that we hope you agree you simply wont be able to play without.

1. Structures Plus (S+)

The one mod I simply cannot live without nor can I build without it, a must-have for any server.

2. Awesome Spyglass

Get important stats and information about any dinosaur you are considering taming before knocking it out.

3. Platforms Anywhere & Platforms Plus

Yeah, okay, this should count as two, but they are one and the same really and before a great addition for new building opportunities.

4. Reusable Plus

Create items that can be used over and over again without breaking, saving you valuable time for taming or building.

5. Automated Ark

Automate tedious tasks like filling turrets or compost bins.

6. Rare Sightings

On the best Ark mods list for the interesting new PVP and PVE scenarios it can create. Either race or fight to be the first to tame an above max level dinosaur.

The best Ark mods for your server:

1: S+ (Structures Plus)

We’ve already mentioned S+ in the Top Building Mods post we did, however, it really is an essential mod for any server and one we highly recommend.

In fact, I won’t actually play on a server now unless it includes S+. The ability to build on any landscapes makes it invaluable.

2: Awesome Spyglass

Want to know how much health a dinosaur has before taming it, considering it may take hours, it’s best to check.

Awesome spyglass will show you the dino’s stats when equipped, meaning you no longer waste time on taming crap dinosaurs, finally!

It also shows you what you can use to tame the dinosaur, making things even easier.

The great thing about this mod is, it’s fully customizable, meaning if you don’t want to be able to target players with it, you can turn that off. You can find a full list of ini settings on the link below.

If you find Awesome Spyglass doesn’t work for you, take a look at Super Spyglass https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=793605978

3: Platforms Anywhere & Platforms Plus

These are two mods, but they work so well together that I felt they should be used together and thus only counted as one.

Platforms Anywhere:

As the name suggests, you can build platforms… Anywhere. Well, kind of, you need to build one of 30 prebuilt stands for them to go on, but you are no longer restricted to trees anymore.

Platforms Plus:

From the same creators as S+ and almost offering the same features, but for platforms, if you plan to live in a tree, or a Platforms anywhere structure, then platform plus is an absolute must.

Platforms anywhere was also made by the same creator too, so both will work together perfectly.

4: Reusable Plus

It gets really annoying trying to make enough bolas to take down a flying dino or having so many spears break at the start of a game when you are just trying to stay alive.

Reusable Plus allows you to create items that can be used over and over again, finally making starting off much less annoying. Crafted items include:

  • Reusable Bola
  • Reusable Flare Gun
  • Reusable Grappling Hook
  • Reusable Parachute
  • Reusable Spear

5: Automated Ark

Automated Ark is one of those mods for Ark that you either love or hate, it’s perfect for casual players that only get a short time to play between work and family life. But also great for people who may just want to jump into the action and not feel like Ark is actually their job.

It does all the tedious jobs that take up so much of your time, especially with a bigger base and potentially more dinosaurs.

It also has some mechanics built in to ensure that it makes up for the fact it is making things easier.

For example, it has a device that will slowly place bullets into all nearby turrets, however, each of these actions costs a small bullet tax, meaning you need to account for this when stockpiling ammo.

Like I said above, some people may find this one makes things too easy, me personally I used to, then I got promoted at work, had a baby and now have less time to play, so I can see the benefits of having it on your server.

You can find a full list of its features and settings on the link below.

6: Rare Sightings

I’m especially fond of Rare Sightings due to its ability to push some interesting PVP scenarios onto the server.

The mod adds a new event to the game that periodically spawns in new dinosaurs that are higher level than the max server settings allow.

You can also get rewarded for either killing or taming a rare sighting dino, giving you even more incentive to get out there and look for them.

If you tame a rare dino it will have a unique color as well as traits.

No stacking mods?

You may wonder why I haven’t included stacking mods on the list, well there are two reasons;

  1. I don’t like them, I don’t mind mods making time-consuming tasks a bit quicker, but find most stacking mods take it too far,
  2. It’s a built-in option in the INI now! Which looking at Reddit, seems some people are not aware of, an example below

Running an Ark Server Tips

When running an Ark server you want to take a couple of things into account, firstly what server provider you plan to use and secondly how many and which mods you plan to use.

Thankfully we have experience with both these areas and are here to help!

Which Server Hosting Should I Use?

We Recommend ArkServers.io as they not only offer a free trial so you can see yourself how good their servers are, but they are also affordable and reliable too.

Their slots go up to 250 players and have servers all over the world making them a decent host no matter where you live.

What’s great about ArkServers.io is that they will let you change your Ark server to another game server, should you decide you want to change game, meaning you don’t need to shell out hard earnt dollars on a new server.

How to Manage Your Server

Whilst Ark is pretty easy to host and maintain your server, there are ways to make admin tasks much easier, meaning you get more time to play and less time running your server.

ASM or Ark Server Manager makes running your server a breeze, from teleporting to restarts, even watching chats to make sure everyone is playing fair and being polite can all be done from one easy screen.

You can setup automated maintenance restarts, as well as having announcements on a timer to make sure players log off in a few simple clicks, which can be repeated daily.

If Ark has a command or setting, you can pretty much tweak it from ASM, making it an essential for any new or hardened Ark server manager.

  1. Structures Plus is a limited support mod. The author Has made one update in 2020 and has made it clear he wont be doing much more. Look into Super Structures, A branch off Structures+ but with continued support.
