Food can be a little tricky when you first enter the world of Subnautica 2. There is plenty around, but you can’t actually eat it! Not yet, at least. Fortunately, it is nice and easy to resolve this little issue.
To keep you going until you get your bearings, there are a few Nutrient Blocks in the storage on the left of the door inside your starting Lifepod. These will see you through for about a day.
Making Food Edible
Time to get wet and find yourself your second Adaptation.
From the Lifepod, look toward the giant tree in the distance, swim in that general direction, past the wreckage you can see popping out of the surface.

You don’t have to go too far. Within a minute, you will see our big blue friend from the tutorial area. This time, it won’t be giving you the ability to breathe. It’ll be messing with your stomach so you can digest this planet’s yummy goodness.
Same as last time, approach the main purple bulb, give it a little tickle, and congratulations. You can now enjoy a lovely meal.
This also has a side benefit of entirely filling up all of your status bars. Health, food, water, and oxygen are all restored to maximum when you gain the new Adaptation.

Finding Food in Subnautica 2
All you do now is swim back to the Lifepod, stopping on the way to harvest some resources.
At the start, chasing fish can be annoying, but if you can catch them, you can eat them raw or take them back for cooking. This will become easier once you have crafted yourself some flippers and are swimming a little faster.
Ignore the schools of tiny fish. They are entirely decorative.
For some easy food that won’t try and run away, look to the local flora. Along the sea floor you will see quite a few of these spindly plants. These can be harvested for little balls of Fibrous Pulp. Useful for making Oily Salad, but also for other recipes.
Give it a whack a few times and you’ll have two pieces of Fibrous Pulp to work with. These plants will respawn, so no need to hold back.

You will also come across other plants that you can harvest, such as the coral mushroom-looking things. However, you will need ingredients you are unlikely to have access to yet, such as salt or lead, so no real need to harvest them just yet. They just take up inventory space.
Swim back to the safety of your Lifepod. Get used to that, it’s your only safe space until you can build yourself a home, and interact with the Fabricator.
Cooking Food in the Fabricator
Here, in the Sustenance option, is where you will find your meals. Cook fish, turn Fibrous Pulp into Oily Salad, and make anything else you unlock along your adventures.
One last thing of note: while you cannot eat raw Fibrous Pulp, you can eat raw fish.
So if you’re in a pinch out in the wilds, catching a fish for a quick nibble will get you through. But getting back home to prepare a meal will give you a higher food intake than eating raw ingredients.
There you have it, the ocean is now your buffet!
Any hand-sized fish can be caught and cooked. There are recipes that will require multiple kinds of fish, different kinds of plants, and ingredients you will have to find or craft elsewhere.
Go and explore! Until then, salads and fish will keep you going.
