With the map being much bigger in Sons of The Forest, it can often be difficult to find your way back to caves and other areas of interest, especially without map markers. Thankfully there is a way to create map markers, but it’s not as straightforward as you might expect.
Unlike other survival games, such as Ark, Sons of The Forest requires you to obtain a couple of items to be able to create a map marker, instead of simply being able to click on the map. The two items required to craft a map marker are a stick and a GPS locator.
Sons of The Forest can be a difficult game, which is why it’s important to use map markers, not only can these help you find your way back to points of interest, but you can also use them to mark important resources, helping you survive when the game gets harder.
Where to Find GPS Locators
There are two ways to obtain GPS locators in Sons of The Forest, the first method is to open your map and look for the purple exclamation marks. These are points of interest that you can already see, due to there being a GPS locator at that location.

The other method, which will require 3D printer ink and a 3D printer, is to simply make one. Many of the game’s underground bunkers (which require the shovel) and special locators include a 3D printer, if you’ve managed to find one of these, you can make as many 3D printers as you need, as long as you have enough ink.
Placing The Map Marker
Now you should have a GPS locator and a stick, you shouldn’t need me to tell you where to find a stick, but just in case, head to the nearest tree and look down.
- Equip the stick in your hand
- Place the stick in the ground
- Equip your GPS locator
- Left-click to place the GPS locator on the stick
It’s that simple, now that you have the map marker set up, you should be able to see the location marked on the map.

If you want to mark specific areas, you can right-click while holding the GPS locator to change the icon, not only will this change the icon displayed on the GPS locator itself, but it will also change on the map, making it even easier to find specific points of interest.
Many of the caves in Sons of The Forest contain loot required to progress in the game, such as the Rebreather cave, marking these caves when you stumble across them can be a great way to make sure you can find your way back to them once you are better equipped.
