If you’re wondering how to fish in New World, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re anything like me, I love to indulge in side quests and skills like fishing in MMOs.
To start fishing in New World, you’re going to need a Fishing Pole and some bait. We’ll walk you through how to get these, how to fish, and the best fishing spots in New World.
How to Get a Fishing Pole in New World
There are a couple of ways you can obtain a Fishing Pole in New World. The easiest and quickest way to get a Fishing Pole is to craft one yourself.
A Fishing Pole requires the following materials:
- 1x Green Wood
- 1x Fiber
You can craft a simple Wooden Fishing Pole at any campfire in New World.
How to Find Green Wood
Green Wood can be collected using the gathering skill on Bushes in New World, or by harvesting a Young Tree with a Logging Axe.
Using better quality tools will yield more Green Wood, aside from harvesting from Bushes.
How to Find Fiber
Fiber is obtained from Hemp plants in New World. It can be a little trickier to find than Green Wood.

If you spawned in Monarch’s Bluffs Watchtower, it’s worth crafting your Fishing Pole at the Watcher’s Campfire since there are Hemp plants in the forest near this location.
Master Fisher Michael Shields
If you don’t want to craft a Fishing Pole yourself, you can visit Master Fisher Michael Shields in Windsward. He will give you a Fishing Pole in New World and some bait, requesting that you complete a side quest to earn some rewards.
If like me, you enjoy side quests and are a bit of a completionist, this is a great way to learn how to fish.
How to Catch Fish in New World
Fishing in New World can be done early on as the requirements to craft a Fishing Pole are very simple. Once you’ve got a Fishing Pole and some Bait (purchased from almost any trader in the game), you can start to fish.
Although you can fish without bait in New World, you have a greater chance of catching better fish with the right bait for the type of water; freshwater or saltwater.
When you’ve found a place to fish near the water, it’s time to enter Fishing Mode!
- Press F3 on your keyboard near a fishing spot
- Press R to equip your bait
- Hold the left-mouse button to start casting your line (a bar will fill up, determining how far your line is cast)
- Release the left-mouse button to cast your line
- Wait until the “Get Ready!” notification appears on your screen
- When instruscted, hold the left-mouse button to start reeling your catch in
- The line tension will be shown in the circle on the screen
- If the tension turns orange, release the left-mouse button until it turns green, then start to reel your fish in
Fishing in New World is actually a lot of fun, but it can be frustrating when the line tension threatens to snap your line. Be patient and increase your Focus attribute to improve your fishing skills.
Not only will you get XP by fishing, but it’s also fun, a good source of food, and you can sell what you don’t want to make money in New World.
Best Fishing Spots in New World
You can catch fish pretty much anywhere in New World, even in the shallowest of waters. Deep water will net you bigger, more valuable fish, which you’ll discover if you fish a lot in the game.
As well as being able to fish by stumbling across a source of water, there are fishing hotspot locations in New World. These locations offer rarer, higher-tier fish.
Note: Fishing hotspots in New World are limited to a certain amount of uses per player.

Using the interactive New World map, you can Hide All filters then select Fishing to highlight the fishing hotspots in the game.
