If you’ve played 7 Days to Die on and off for some time now, the chances are you will remember water being one of the easiest resources to get in the game. You simply crafted some jars, collected water, and boiled it. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy anymore, and 7 Days to Die doesn’t offer much guidance on how to get water. Same story as clay. The game changed the old method and didn’t exactly shout about it.
There are a couple of ways you can get water in 7 Days to Die, but it depends on how far through the game you are. At the start of the game, much of it is down to luck, but as you progress, hoarding jars of water does become easier.
The Survivalist: Boilinging Murky Water
Until you’ve managed to progress through the game and level up a little, boiling murky water is going to be your best bet. This might sound easy, but it’s a little harder than it used to be, thanks to the game’s removal of jars back in Alpha 21.
Instead of simply collecting standing water with an empty jar, in the newer versions you need to find the murky water while out looting. You can find murky water in plenty of loot containers, but these are the most common places to find it:
- Toilets
- Water dispenser (chance of finding clean water as well)
- Soda machines
- Coolers
- Coffee pots
- Food piles
Anywhere you would expect to find liquid in real life, you can expect to get water in 7 Days to Die. Most of the time it will be murky water, so you will have to boil it to make sure it is safe to drink, and you aren’t guaranteed to get murky water, but if you keep looting the above containers, the chances are you will stumble across some.

If you’re playing your own 7 Days to Die server, you could consider adding mods to the game. There is a mod that brings back craftable jars, letting you collect your own water in the same way the base game used to let you do.
The Pampered Princess Way: Buying Water
If you’ve not strayed too far from your local trader, you could check in and see if they’re selling water. While they do cost 120 Duke’s Casino Tokens each to buy, it’s an easy way to make sure you stay hydrated and don’t lose stamina.

If you’ve moved too far from the trader, you could instead look around for a vending machine. They’re very common in the game and more often than not will have water and other drinks for sale. If you struggle to find a vending machine, look around for the nearest motel. They frequently tend to have vending machines.
The Crafters Way: Building a Dew Collector
Once you’ve progressed, you want to start building one or more Dew Collectors, as these will start making water for you, without you needing to go out and loot anymore.
The Dew Collector does create heat, so you want to make sure that you have a well-designed base that is capable of withstanding the extra attention, or place them in a dedicated water farm area away from your base.
To build the Dew Collector you will need:
- 100 Scrap polymers
- 4 Short iron pipes
- 4 Duct tape
You do not need a water filter to craft it anymore. That was the Alpha 21 recipe. From 1.0 onward the filter is a tool you slot into the collector later.
Unlock sits behind Workstations / Forge Ahead (around level 2). One Forge Ahead magazine is enough to get started.
A stock collector produces murky water, roughly one every 6 to 10 in-game hours, so about two to four a day. Give it a clear view of the sky. Bars and frames above the middle block are fine.
Then add tools if you’ve got them:
- Water Filter turns the output into clean water
- Tarp increases how much you get
- Gatherer speeds up collection
Buy the filter from a trader, take it as a quest reward, or pull one off a broken collector in the world. All three tools in one collector is the late-game version.
