Sons of The Forest is a brutal survival game, and much like its predecessor The Forest you need to be prepared to set up defenses quickly to ensure your camp isn’t overrun.
Many of you might have noticed that the instructions in the survival guide don’t actually work. While there are very clear instructions for building a gate, placing the final log to turn your wall into a gate just doesn’t work.
As it stands there is a workaround to build a gate, however, it doesn’t offer much in the way of security, as enemies are able to simply walk through the door. You could shove a log or something to block the door, but let’s face it, that’s going to get annoying.
How to Build the Temporary Gate
To survive in Sons of The Forest, you need a defensive wall, but without a gate, you also need a way in and out of your base for you Kelvin, and even Virginia. Thankfully you can construct a simple doorway as a temporary measure until the developers fix the issues with building gates.
Once you have chosen where you would like your gate, you will need to leave a little extra room for the doorway. This is because the normal doorway isn’t meant to work as a gate, so it will likely cause issues with snapping.

If you’ve been placing your defensive wall, you will likely see a circle where you can place a log, you can change this by right-clicking and then placing the log on the ground, next to the defensive wall. Don’t worry about the gap, you can fill it in once the doorway has been placed.

Start stacking the logs on top of each other, until they reach seven high. This will give you a standard wall, which you can now use to turn into a doorway.
If you look at the logs with your axe out and left click, you will notice a red outline appears, this will let you cut holes out of your wall.

Cut all the logs, apart from the top and bottom ones, doing so will leave you with an empty doorway, which we can fill in next.
Simply grab a couple of logs, if you don’t have enough, command Kelvin to go get some logs for you, and use them to create a door and fill in the doorway.
If you have any gaps, you should now be able to fit them in. It won’t be the prettiest design, but for now, it will save you from having a massive gap in your defences.

If you’re worried about the doorway being a weak spot, you can always build some spikes in front of the door, just make sure to leave enough room to maneuver in and out of your base without getting hurt yourself.
Of course, as soon as the proper defensive gate is fixed, we will update this guide with up-to-date information.
